The tickets were actually sold out for the Alcatraz tour. (note: arrange for your tickets a couple of weeks before you want to take the tour) We had heard from the hotel that they open a sales window at pier 33 at 6:00am to sell tickets that don't get claimed. Tom volunteered to go, he left the rest of us snoozing in the hotel. Thanks Tom!! :) He got to the pier just in time - we got the last four tickets for the 9:00am tour. It was a fascinating tour. Definitely one of the highlights of the trip. We learned about some of the prisoners (Al Capone, "Machine Gun" Kelly) that served time there, some of the escape attempts, some of the workings of the prison, and how cold and hard it was to be a prisoner at Alcatraz.
